Southport won the match 3 games to 2 but it had to come down to the last match - a doubles match.  Earlier in some long games, Val Knigge, a member of both clubs but representing Broadbeach, had caused an upset playing superbly to defeat both Randall Whyte (7-5) and Gabby Spencer 7-6 in a nail biter.  Randall and Gabby had 7-3 and 7-4 wins respectively over Annette Gatland and clinched the result with a resounding doubles win 7-1 over Annette Gatland and Val Knigge.
